Gavin McKenna joins Auston Matthews on the Maple Leafs' top line

With Kirill Marchenko out for weeks, rookie Gavin McKenna moves up to the top line with Auston Matthews and Jack Roslovic. A real opportunity for poolers.

We've been waiting on this one since camp. In Game 15, Gavin McKenna finally walked in and saw his name on Auston Matthews' left on the Maple Leafs' top line, with Jack Roslovic on the right, for Wednesday's game in Seattle. Luke Fox of Sportsnet has the story.

Why now

Toronto is banged up up front. Per Sportsnet, Kirill Marchenko left the road trip early with a lower-body injury from Monday's loss to Calgary and will be out weeks. John Tavares is still rehabbing back in Toronto. Coach Jim Hiller had never started his two first overall picks together, but the injuries opened the door.

McKenna and Matthews already have some power-play chemistry. At five on five they've only shared about 19 minutes this season, but the Leafs outshot opponents 11 to 4 and outscored them 2 to 0 in that time.

What it means for your pool

  • Gavin McKenna: riding with Matthews is the dream setup for a rookie. If someone dropped him in your league, go get him. One caution, Sportsnet notes 13 giveaways against 4 takeaways, and Matthews always draws the other team's top matchup.
  • Auston Matthews: nothing changes, he's a must start.
  • Jack Roslovic: nice bump in role. In deep leagues he's worth a look while this line stays together.
  • Kirill Marchenko: out for weeks. Move him to your IR slot if your league has one.

There's no promise the line sticks, so check the next few lineups before you blow up your roster.
